"SOS rehydrates you three times faster than drinking water alone, and beats all competing hydration drinks in all metrics." - Dr. Blanca Mayo

Electrolyte Drinks

The term “Electrolyte drink” can be a little misleading as there are vast differences in the electrolyte amounts and ratios you will find in different products.

Typically sports drinks contain high amounts of sugar and only moderate amounts of electrolytes that don’t truly reflect the levels that we lose in sweat. SOS, as an Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) contains important electrolytes, in particular sodium and potassium, in the levels that are stipulated by the World Health Organisation to meet their standards of an optimal rehydration formula. For example, SOS contains 3 times the sodium of the market leading sports drink.

The ratio of electrolytes to sugar and water also governs how quickly and effectively the fluid will be absorbed. Most sports drinks are isotonic or hypertonic which means their osmolarity is equal to or higher than the bodies. This leads to slower gastric emptying and absorption. SOS is hypotonic or lower than the bodies osmolarity, which in turn leads to a quicker path throw the digestive tract and faster absorption in the small bowel.

Electrolyte Powder

When it comes to getting electrolytes naturally, a time poor athlete may not be able to get ample levels from their diet so they need to implement in their hydration strategy the inclusion of electrolyte drinks, powders or supplements.

In an ever so health conscious world we are always looking for alternative ways to supplement our sporting needs without products full of additives, preservatives and other non-natural chemical compounds.

It is for this reason some athletes may prefer to look at making their own home made electrolyte drinks, but without knowing the right balance of minerals and glucose you won’t be getting the most effective solution to hydrate and replace these valuable minerals quickly.

Some of the most common minerals and their effect on athletic performance or has it may be under performance are deficiencies in Sodium, Magnesium and Potassium.

Fluid Balance

Sodium is an important component in helping the body stay hydrated and regulating fluid balance.

It is important for this mineral to be present in a sports hydration drinks because of the increased sweat losses experienced by athletes.

Athletes will require more sodium than the RDI compared to the general public for this reason, and may need to consume upwards of 10 grams of sodium per day, a large difference to the upper limit of 2.3 grams recommended for the normal daily intake.

Blood Pressure*

Potassium is useful in controlling blood pressure* by regulating the sodium levels within the blood.

Because electrolyte balance can be effected not only by an athletes dietary intake but also what supplements are taken it is useful for a sports hydration drink that has sodium in it to have small amounts of potassium to help regulate the sodium absorption.

Potassium also reduces the risk of decreased bone density and lowers the risk of kidney stones.

Endurance and Strength

Magnesium is an important nutrient as it helps the regulation of vitamin D in the body.

Magnesium deficiency in athletes is can be amongst some of the most common problems and although available in normal diets from vegetables, nuts and seeds it is included in the SOS formula to help maintain efficient levels.

Some studies have found that magnesium supplements when given to athletes improved physical performance, this was also shown to have a positive effect on endurance and strength.

With so many electrolyte supplements, sports drinks and rehydration formulas out there it can be hard to decide which is the best. A lot of the well known ones are full of sugar, preservatives and other unpleasant additives so we’re here to make your choice easy with a high quality sports and lifestyle hydration drink.. Not only does SOS Hydration contain a high concentration of all the electrolytes you need to rehydrate effectively, SOS is also naturally sweetened with stevia and contains no artificial colours or flavours.
