Morning, Afternoon, Evening
If you want to progress as an athlete, you need to learn from the best. Take a look at what a day in the life of UK’s most successful distance runner looks like.
Mohammed ‘Mo’ Farah is one of the world’s most well-known athletes. After living in Somalia for the first eight years of his life, he moved to the United Kingdom. Despite his wishes to become a football player for Arsenal, running became his primary career choice.
Ever since he was a junior athlete, Mo has been extremely successful. After many successes in global competitions, it was the Olympics that offered him a chance to climb to the top. He took that chance in 2012, when he completed the hardest track double there is, the 5000m and 10,000m gold medals back to back at the Olympics and the World Championship in Athletics. Rio 2016 was the event that put Mo’s name in the history of the Olympics as the world’s most successful distance runner.
This kind of success takes impeccable discipline and hard work. If you’ve ever wondered what the everyday life of the world’s most successful athletes looks like, you’ll now get a glimpse of Mo’s.
Morning
Mo gets up between 7am and 8am. He states that it really depends on the time his son wakes him up. Mo takes care of his son, while his wife gets the other three kids ready for school. For breakfast, he usually eats two slices of toast with jam and black coffee.
After his light and nutritious breakfast, Mo drives to the Nike headquarters nearby for a run. He usually does 10-12 miles of running in order to maintain his shape and stamina. After he finishes, he goes back home around midday, to recover and reenergise.
Afternoon
When he comes back from his morning run, Mo has a nutritious lunch and recovers. He often has pasta, chicken salad, or a panini. The amount of food he eats depends on how heavy he trained in the morning. Since he says that his body isn’t as strong as it was, it takes him longer to recover at times. In this case, he usually eats larger meals.
After lunch, he goes to his man cave to unwind, after which he spends as much time with his kids as he can. He takes them to the park to play with them, and inspire them to work hard, since some of his children are into running as well.
Evening
An important part of Mo’s evening is another running session. He runs less than in the morning, around 6 miles. Even though he says that his body isn’t what it used to be, he believes that proper training can improve the body’s capability. Of course, he needs to look after himself a bit more, which mostly includes a proper diet, as well as a proper rehydration technique.
After his evening run, he goes back home for dinner. If he cooks on his own, he says that he loves making spaghetti Bolognese, as it reminds him of his university days. After dinner, he puts his kids to bed and reads to them. He says that he loves doing that so much that it inspired him to write a children’s book. He believes that educating them about life is important, which he enjoys doing it very much.
After doing all of this, he goes to bed to get the necessary sleep. Since he’s spent many years running, he understands the importance of giving your body enough time to rest.
The Final Word
So as you can see, the life of one of the world’s best runners doesn’t vary that much from the ordinary, except for the exquisite discipline and hard work. These two things are the cornerstone of success, but there’s more to it than just training.
Mo emphasises the importance of being able to give your body all the fuel it needs to perform at its best. You need to have a nutritious diet, maintain a good sleeping schedule, and, last but not least, the best way to rehydrate yourself.
The reason why this is important is that proper fluid and electrolyte replacement is essential to being able to train and improve your performance. Here at SOS hydration, we know how important this is to athletes. This is why we designed a formula that will ensure an athlete can replace all the fluids and necessary electrolytes easily.
